Will there be change orders during my job?

Accepted Answer

Some contractors use change orders to take advantage of clients and increase their profits, but I don’t operate that way. I prefer to give an accurate bid in the first place so change orders aren’t needed. There are situations where change orders may be necessary, but I try to avoid them whenever possible.<BR>

Will you know if there’s dry rot in my home before starting my project?

Accepted Answer

Dry rot hides pretty well, so the only way to really know if it’s there is to go behind the substrate, which usually means removing a wall or a fixture. When it comes to remodeling, the worst cases of dry rot are almost always in the bathroom, due to the presence of water. I try to anticipate such issues, but it’s not always possible.<BR>

What are some of the challenges of installing trim?

Accepted Answer

The biggest challenge is figuring out the angles. Once you add sheetrock to a framed house, nothing is as exact as it looks, so you have to know how to vary your angles to make the trim fit properly.<BR>

How do you deal with baseboards in homes that don’t have level floors?

Accepted Answer

One solution is to install a shoe mold. Let’s say you have an old hardwood floor that has rolls and bumps in it. I can install your baseboards as level as possible and then use a flexible shoe mold to cover any gaps between the baseboards and the floor.<BR>

Can you give me some advice for planning a remodeling project?

Accepted Answer

Don’t max out your budget—have a reserve for unexpected issues that pop up. With any remodeling project, there are inevitably things that need to be changed or hidden problems like termites or dry rot. In general, it’s good to have an additional 10 percent of your total project budget in reserve.
