Sergiu Deac: Building Opportunity
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
SAN JOSE — After finding the opportunity he sought in the United States, Sergiu Deac continued to build upon that initial foundation and further his career. “In 2001, I left my home country of Romania and came to the U.S. to start a new life,” he recounts. “For me, the U.S. is a place where, even if you come with nothing, you can be successful if you work hard enough, so it seemed like a good environment in which to pursue my professional career.” Sergiu started out working for his cousin, a general contractor who taught him everything from kitchen and bathroom remodeling to custom home building. Eventually, he used the knowledge and experience he’d gained to start his own construction company.
Today, as owner of Best Construction, Sergiu says his favorite part of his job is building relationships with his clients. “I love working with people and seeing the happiness on their faces after we’ve completed their projects. I also enjoy seeing the finished product, and I take pride in the knowledge that I’m leaving behind a legacy with what I build.”
A resident of San Jose, Sergiu spends most of his time outside of work with his wife and business partner, Anamaria, and their two boys, Darius and Luca. “Our boys are the diamonds of our lives,” he says. “However, like most boys, they’re full of energy, which is why we do a lot of outdoor activities like hiking.” Sergiu also enjoys having fun with friends (many of whom are former clients), riding his motorcycle and going fishing.
In his life and career, Sergiu espouses the importance of honesty. “I think it’s important to be a man of your word, both personally and professionally,” he says. “A lot of people say things they don’t actually mean, especially in politics and the media, but for me, it’s critical to say what you mean and follow through with it. I think that has been a key part of my company’s success.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Sergiu says he’d see the world. “I don’t see myself being completely retired; I’ll probably work until the last day of my life because I enjoy what I do. However, if I had the time, I’d definitely travel more. In general, I don’t think humans travel enough—we’re so busy taking care of our families and trying to be successful that we forget there’s a whole world out there to explore.”
