CITRUS HEIGHTS – Gary Kluck has a lot on his plate. Between managing a home improvement company with more than 180 employees to singlehandedly running a household, it’s easy to think the stress might get to him now and then. However, Gary says maintaining a positive outlook goes a long way toward achieving both inner peace and outward success. “I’m a ‘glass half full’ kind of guy. I have a very upbeat personality, so when I do get stressed, I just stay calm and look at the positives of the situation, and pretty soon I’m back to normal.”
Born and raised in Wisconsin, Gary got his start in the construction industry at an early age. “I began working for my father when I was about 12 years old,” he remembers. “He was in home improvement and did a lot of concrete work and rough framing. I started out doing mostly grunt work, but I continued to learn and develop my skills, and I’ve been immersed in it ever since.”
Gary’s westward migration began in the early 1980s and included a five-year stint working in Colorado before he eventually reached Northern California. When the company he had been working for went bankrupt following a change of ownership, Gary reached out for advice on his next move. “I called the original owner of the business and asked him what I should do next,” he recalls. “He said, ‘Go do your own thing.’ I took his advice and started my own company, and it was the best decision I ever made.” Today, nearly a decade later, Quality First Home Improvement, Inc. is going strong with Gary at the helm.
In addition to running a business, Gary is employed as a full-time father and homemaker, raising his youngest of four daughters while his wife, Tamara, is pursuing her own career out-of-state. “A few years back, my wife decided to go to medical school to become a physician,” he explains. “She’s actually in Pennsylvania doing her residency right now, so I’m kind of like Mr. Mom for the next couple years.” Though his responsibilities keep him busy, Gary does find time to play golf with his friends on a regular basis. He also takes advantage of the occasional opportunity to get away from it all. “We have a cabin up at Eagle Lake, and we like to go out there to do some boating and fishing and just enjoy the peacefulness of nature.”
Gary attributes much of his personal and professional success to the power of positive thinking. “We attract what we think and feel, so it’s important to feel great and think great,” he says. “That’s what I tell all my employees, and it’s really how I built the company. When we started, there were four of us; now, there are 181. By putting out positive energy, we’ve been able to attract positive people who want to do good things.”

SUISUN CITY — Few homeowners realize how much damage birds (especially pigeons) can cause to a roof. The acidity of bird droppings can cause extensive damage to roofing materials, resulting in leaks and other issues. On tile roofs, buildup from droppings can cause water (as well as the droppings themselves) to dam up and be diverted beneath the tiles, which creates excessive saturation and/or deterioration that leads to leaks, mold and dry rot. Given enough time, bird droppings can even corrode through metal gutters. An even greater concern is the health risks that can arise from exposure to bird droppings on your property (again, particularly with pigeons). Fortunately, owner Aaron Weiss has the professional background and expertise to back up his company’s moniker. “I’ve been in roofing my whole life,” he says. “Straight out of high school, I started working for my family’s roofing company in Richmond. Roofing always seemed like a good trade, and since I had the added support of my family, I saw a lot of opportunity to succeed. After working for the family business for several years, my brother and I branched off and started our own company in Solano County.”
Today, as owner of Roofmasters / Bird Control Services, Aaron says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “I really enjoy helping people who are having issues with their roofs and providing them with quality service. It’s always rewarding.” He also explains how his company’s specialization in bird control has enabled it to stand out amongst the competition. “A common roof issue is damage caused by birds, so we decided to get into bird abatement, which includes techniques like putting up netting and chemical application. We had really good results when we first introduced it, and now it’s a big part of our business.”
A lifetime resident of the Bay Area, Aaron says it’s an ideal environment for someone in his line of work. “The weather in the Bay Area makes it a great place for roofing. You don’t have to deal with some of the bigger weather patterns that you would in other regions, so we’re pretty lucky in that way.”
Outside of work, Aaron spends most of his time with his wife, Wendy, and their six children. “Wendy and I each have two adult children, and then we have a 1-year-old and a 2-month-old together,” he explains. “Basically, we’ve started all over again! We really enjoy taking the little ones places and sharing new experiences with them.” Aaron also likes activities like camping, following professional sports and performing home remodeling projects. “In addition to working on my own house, I do a lot of remolding projects for friends and family, which is very rewarding.”
In his life and career, Aaron espouses the wisdom of the age-old golden rule. “It’s all about treating people the way you’d want to be treated,” he affirms. “At the end of each day, I like to go to bed knowing I did my best and treated my colleagues and clients in an honest, respectful way.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Aaron says he’d employ his building know-how to construct a mountain hideaway. “I would build a cabin in the mountains. That way, whenever I wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, I’d have a place to retreat.”

NAPA—After finding success in commercial construction, Eddy Deniz took an opportunity to do what he loved on a smaller, more specialized scale. “I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Petaluma,” he says. “My father and I always did a lot of building and maintenance around the farm, and as a result, I gravitated toward construction. I went to college for construction management and then got a job with a large commercial firm. However, I had a passion to start my own business—something smaller and more akin to the environment I grew up in. I decided I should specialize in one aspect of the industry, so I chose windows and doors. In 2020, I got the opportunity to purchase American Window and Door Systems, which allowed me to branch out into the residential market.”
Today, Eddy says his favorite part of his job is adding value to his customers’ homes and lives. “I like seeing the finished product and the added value for the homeowner—not just property value, but aesthetic value and improved energy efficiency as well. I take a lot of pride in what my team and I are able to accomplish for our clients.”
A resident of Sebastopol, Eddy spends most of his time outside of work with his wife, Bethany, and their two children. “We enjoy going to the beach, attending the kids’ sporting events and vacationing at Lake Tahoe. NOVATO — After more than three decades in the window washing business, Damon Turner looks back on the catalyst for his longtime career. “Before I got into window washing, I was working in construction,” he recounts. “I had a couple of friends who were in the business, and they told me I could make more money cleaning windows than being a construction laborer. A few months later, when their company had an opening, I was able to get in and start working as a window washer. Years later, my business partner, Eric Kennedy, and I bought the company, and we’ve been running it for more than 30 years now.”
Today, as president of Smart Window Cleaning, Damon says his favorite part of his job is giving his customers great service. “We get a lot of positive feedback on our work, so it’s very satisfying to know we can provide quality service for our clients and keep providing it year after year.” Damon also enjoys the smaller aspects of the job, like handling the company’s schedule. “I enjoy scheduling because it’s like a puzzle. I have to schedule all these different workers at different locations for different types of work, so it’s a fun challenge.”
A resident of Vallejo (where he lives with his wife, Mary Ann), Damon spends his time outside of work on a couple of favorite pastimes. “My main hobby is playing pickleball, which is basically a combination of ping-pong and tennis,” he explains. “It’s more high-energy than tennis, with shorter games. I enjoy meeting up with other players in the area and competing in annual pickleball tournaments. I also like traveling. My wife and I have a timeshare that has locations all over the western United States, so we like taking trips to places like Palm Springs, Las Vegas and Solvang.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Damon espouses the importance of mutual benefit. “With each job, I want to create a win-win situation for everyone,” he affirms. “I make sure the client feels like we’ve taken care of them and communicated effectively, and I also make sure we’re fairly compensated in return. I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve been able maintain our loyal customer base over the years, including relationships that span multiple generations.”
A lifetime East Bay resident, Mike was born in Castro Valley and later settled in Livermore, where he lives today. Outside of work, he enjoys being outdoors, whether fishing in the mountains or spending a day at the beach in Carmel. In addition to personal hobbies, Mike keeps up with his sons, Matt and Shane, and makes frequent trips to Texas to visit his daughter, Laura, and grandson, Ethan.

After working as a Yellow Pages salesman for a few years, I got a job as a window and siding sales estimator at Sears. It was there that I met Kevin Gundry, who is now co-owner of Custom Exteriors. Later, while working for a Bay Area home exterior company, I got a call from Kevin, who suggested we start our own business. I decided to take him up on the idea. At the start, we worked out of my wife’s flower shop in Orinda. Two decades later, we have our own showroom and more than 40 employees.”
Today, as president of Custom Exteriors, Inc., Jeff cites two crucial ingredients that account for the company’s success. “First, there’s a very solid partnership between the owners. Kevin and I are also very hands-on with the business, which is unusual for owners in this industry. Additionally, we have some incredible employees—very loyal, dedicated and caring. A resident of Lafayette, Jeff spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I’m a passionate golfer, an avid fisherman and a sports nut,” he lists. “My favorite sports teams are the Cal Bears, the 49ers, the Giants, the Warriors and the Sharks.” Jeff also enjoys spending time with his wife, Donna, and their three children and two grandchildren.

When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jeff says he’d spend more time pursuing the activities he currently enjoys. “I’d play more golf, fish more often and spend more time with my family. However, I’d also want to work part-time and keep my hand in the industry. I enjoy what I do and I’m good at it, so it would be fun to work a couple of times a week doing measurements and dropping by jobsites.”

Outside of work, Jeff spends his time on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy playing golf and going to professional sporting events. When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jeff says he’d head to a tropical locale. “I would probably take a trip to Hawaii and just take a couple of weeks to rest and regenerate. After all, what better way to decompress than by relaxing on a beach?”

SAN RAMON — When Tom Rhoads first got involved in the roofing industry, he was merely looking for a way to supplement his income…little did he know it would lead to a lifelong career. “I was 18 years old, working at a grocery store, when my hours were unexpectedly cut back,” he remembers. “To make ends meet, I started working with my neighbor, who was a roofer. I always liked being outside, so the work really suited me, and I ended up sticking with it. After a couple of years of training, I struck out on my own, and 32 years later, I’m still at it.”
Today, as owner of Roof-Life Construction, Tom says his favorite part of his job is the opportunity to make a positive impact. “We do a lot of energy-saving measures like installing solar panels and improving roof ventilation. Besides helping our clients save money on their energy bills, we’re also able to help the environment, so it’s very rewarding.”
Tom is a resident of Dublin, where he lives with his wife, Sheila. Outside of work, he likes to spend as much time as possible immersed in the great outdoors. “We have a cabin near Yosemite National Park, so we spend a lot of time up there, hiking and enjoying nature,” he says. Tom also enjoys playing volleyball at the beach and coaching soccer at Dublin High School. Additionally, he takes time to keep up with his and Sheila’s three children. “One of my sons is currently attending the University of Reno, another is at Arizona State and my daughter will be starting at UC Santa Barbara this fall.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Tom says he’d tackle some long-deferred home projects. “I’d probably get started on my to-do list. I have quite a few projects around the house that need to be done, so if I stopped working, I’d finally have some time to get to them.”

&nbsp; NOVATO — If you want to maintain your windows in between professional cleanings, you’ll need to have the right cleaning tools and techniques at your disposal. Start with the tools: Go to your local hardware store and pick up a strip washer (sort of like a mop that’s used on windows) and a squeegee. Once you have your tools, follow this technique: 1. Use your strip washer to wet and scrub the window. If you have baked-on dirt, you can use some #4 steel wool (the finest grade available) to get more abrasive power. 2. NOVATO &mdash; When Eric Kennedy started cleaning windows for additional income during college, he never thought it would lead to a lifelong livelihood. “My roommate and I were looking for a way to make some extra money, so we decided to try window cleaning,” he recounts. “We bought some tools, went out and did a couple of stores at the Northgate Mall. We did OK, but it didn’t really go anywhere, so I got a job working for a local window cleaning company where I could get formally trained. It turned out to be a natural fit—I enjoyed the physical work, as well as getting to work in and around beautiful homes all day. Almost 30 years later, I’m now co-owner of the same company I first started working for, along with my business partner, Damon Turner.”
As co-owner of Smart Window Cleaning, Eric says he appreciates the balance his position affords. “I’m not out cleaning windows anymore—I work in the office now—but I enjoy training our employees and passing on my knowledge of the trade. I also go out and do estimates for homeowners around the Bay Area, which gives me a nice balance between working in the office and being out in the field.”
A resident of Petaluma (where he lives with his wife, Suk Yen, and stepson, Aiden), Eric expresses his appreciation for its mellow pace of life. “It’s hard to beat North Bay living, especially here in Petaluma. In particular, my family and I love the Petaluma downtown area—besides having a historic aesthetic, it just has a good vibe.”
Outside of work, Eric can often be found riding bicycles with his family. “We like to put our bikes on the car and go riding in different spots around the Bay Area, like Tiburon or along the San Francisco Marina,” he says. “We also like eating out and going to the movies.”
In regard to his professional career, Eric acknowledges the contributions his employees have made to his company’s ongoing success. “The fact that what we do is seasonal can make it hard to retain employees, so we’ve been very fortunate that they keep coming back,” he explains. “If they didn’t, we wouldn’t be successful, so we really appreciate them and make an effort to maintain those relationships. It gives us a lot of pride that they continue to be a part of our team.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Eric he’d spend more time abroad. “My wife and I have a dream of buying a second home in Indonesia, which is where she’s from, and living abroad part-time. We’d continue to maintain a home here, so we could just go back and forth as we pleased. Hopefully that’s something we can afford to do one day.”

A resident of Vallejo (where he lives with his wife and two children), Raul spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “My main hobby is working on cars,” he details. “When I was a kid, my dad taught me how to change oil and things like that, and ever since then I’ve loved automotive work.” When he’s not under the hood of a car, Raul enjoys spending quality time with his family, whether it’s an afternoon at a local park or a weekend getaway to Lake Berryessa.

At first, we were basically going door to door, throwing flyers onto driveways and cold-calling past contacts. We grew substantially during the following decade, nearly doubling our business each year. When the 2008 crash hit, we had to weather some hard times, but we hung in there and have since been on the rise.”
Today, as CFO of Custom Exteriors, Inc., Kevin says his favorite part of his job is transforming people’s homes with exterior upgrades. “It’s amazing how something as simple as replacing windows can make a home look so much better. When he’s not working, Kevin likes to spend as much time as possible outdoors. “I’m a big backpacker—I probably backpack 100 miles every summer,” he details. “My goal is to backpack along the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Oregon, and every year I do another chunk of it.” Besides backpacking, Kevin enjoys fishing, camping and spending time with his family.
In regard to his career, Kevin espouses the importance of quality over quantity. “While we’re happy to see our company growing again, we don’t want to grow just for growth’s sake,” he explains. “After all, you can be a huge company, but if you aren’t making your customers happy, what good is it? That’s why we pay close attention to efficient management and customer satisfaction, with the goal of continually improving the way we run our business. By staying focused on what matters most, we hope to continue growing in both size and excellence.”

PLEASANTON — As a young man, Grayeagle Porter could never have foreseen the unique course his professional path would take. One thing is for sure: he wouldn’t change a thing about it. “I actually began my career in the theater,” he recounts. “I got my degree in dramatic arts and acted professionally for about 10 years. After getting married, I needed higher-paying work, so I got into the hospitality industry and worked in hotels and restaurants. During this time, I was approached by the owner of a window company, who told me I’d be really good at selling windows. It seemed like a good opportunity, so I got trained and started doing it. Later, in 2000, I was hired at Custom Exteriors and I’ve been here ever since.”
As a design consultant at Custom Exteriors, Inc., Grayeagle says he takes pride in having a specific area of expertise. “After coming on at Custom Exteriors, I found myself drawn to wood windows and completely immersed myself in that aspect of the industry. I toured factories throughout the country and took every opportunity to learn more. As a result, over the years, I’ve carved a niche for myself as a leading wood window expert in the Bay Area.”
Born on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation in New York and raised in Niagara Falls, Grayeagle came to California as a teenager. “I basically ran away from home, came out here and roughed it,” he says. “I put myself through school and all of that. However, I’ve always kept close ties with my family back east, and I still visit them regularly.”
Outside of work, Grayeagle’s primary pastimes include performing with his band and traveling. “I’m the male lead singer of Site6, a local band that plays ’70s and ’80s pop, rock, and blues covers,” he details. “It’s a very fun, close-knit group, and we’re highly sought after. I also love to travel. Besides visiting family back east, I take lots of trips to visit the friends I’ve made throughout the U.S. and the world.”
In his life and career, Grayeagle measures his success by the quality (and quantity) of his relationships. “To me, the most important thing is considering others—to be kind, helpful and nurturing. As a professional, I never mislead my customers; rather, I try to lead them where they want to go. I’m very blessed. I have many friends and many people who love me, so I’m a living success.”
When asked what he’d do if he retired tomorrow, Grayeagle says he’d probably move to Canada. “Since I was raised in Niagara Falls, I have dual citizenship, and I still have family there. The people in Canada are nice and it’s not nearly as crowded as it is here. The main thing I’d have to give up here is the weather, but it’d be worth it to be closer to my family.”

A: The past. I would probably go back to America about 800 years ago when there was nobody here but us natives.

PLEASANTON — After joining the United States Air Force, David Lopez figured he’d spend the rest of his life soaring through the skies. In the end, he found satisfaction in a more grounded career. “Out of high school, I joined the Air Force and served four years as a crew chief on an A-10 Thunderbolt,” he recounts. “After I got out, my plan was to become a pilot for United Airlines. Between moving back to California from my Air Force base in Tucson, I made a friend who was in the construction business. I started working with him and I enjoyed it, so I figured I’d do construction for a while and look into piloting later.”
David’s temporary stint in construction turned out to be a long-term engagement, and over the next several years he became versed in all aspects of the trade. At a certain point, he decided to switch from field work to sales. After gaining experience with a couple of different companies, David was hired by Custom Exteriors, Inc., where he has been for nearly a decade.
Today, as sales manager at Custom Exteriors, David says his favorite part of his job is passing on his knowledge to the company’s new recruits. “I really like working with our new sales reps, teaching them what I’ve learned in my career and equipping them to help homeowners like I do.”
A resident of Pleasanton, David spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I like going fishing, camping and pretty much anything else outdoors,” he details. “I also enjoy cooking at home and watching football.” Additionally, David likes doing activities with his wife, Lourdes, and their two children. “I really enjoy getting out and about with my family and exploring different parts of the Bay Area.”
In his life and career, David says one of his primary motivations is helping others. “I want to be able to look back on my life and say, ‘I did something good for somebody.’ I like helping others, and I’m very thankful to have a job where I get to help people fix up their homes—that gives me great satisfaction.”

David Lopez: A Grounded Career

SANTA CLARA — When replacing a window in your home, you have two basic options: installing a new construction window or doing a retrofit application. With a new construction installation, the existing window is removed (frame and all) and replaced with a new one. With a retrofit application, the new window is installed within the existing frame. Since the installation process on a retrofit is much quicker, it’s the more economical option. However, since retrofit windows are installed into existing frames, if those frames aren’t perfectly plumb or square, there’s greater potential for issues to arise after the fact. <h1>Eric Holder: A Clear Perspective</h1>

SANTA CLARA — With a family background in the glass and window business, Eric Holder always had a clear view of where his career path would ultimately lead him. “My father worked for this company back in the 1950s and eventually bought out the original owners, so I’ve been around it all my life,” he affirms. “After high school, I went to college and majored in business. By the time I graduated, my dad was at a point where he was ready to retire, so at the age of 21, I took over ownership of the company.”
Today, as owner of Able Glass Company, Eric says his favorite part of his job is taking care of customers. “I get the most enjoyment from achieving customer satisfaction. When a customer calls and is hysterical about a broken or leaking window, it’s very gratifying when we’re able to go out there, take care of the issue and leave them happy.”
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Eric resides today in San Jose with his wife, Shandi, and their three sons, Austin, Dylan and Evan. In addition to the Bay Area’s temperate weather, Eric says he appreciates the diversity of the landscape. “There’s an incredible variety of things to do here, especially since we’re so close to everything. Whether you want to go to the beach, the mountains or the city, you’re just a short drive away.”
Outside of work, Eric takes every opportunity to get outdoors and spend time with his family. “We love going to the beach, and we enjoy going fishing when we can,” he says. “Also, the boys are active in sports, so most weekends we’re attending their baseball or soccer games.” In addition to his sons’ sporting events, Eric likes keeping up with local professional sports teams. “I support all of our local teams, but I attend San Jose Sharks games the most, since they’re right here in town.”
In regard to his professional career, Eric believes in the importance of providing every customer with quality, attentive service. “It’s always been a pet peeve of mine to walk into a business and not be greeted or receive service, so I’m always thinking about my own business from that perspective,” he says. “I try to treat every customer with respect, get them the best value for their money and, most importantly, give them the end result they’re looking for. I just want them to be completely satisfied with everything.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Eric says he’d take an extended vacation. “I would take my family on a trip and just get away for a while. Running a business keeps me very busy, so it’d be nice to go to Hawaii and just spend a week or two relaxing on the beach.”

PLEASANTON — After several years in the carpet and upholstery cleaning industry, Eric Warm had reached a professional plateau. Fortunately, thanks to an uncommon drive to succeed (along with a helpful referral), he was able to advance his career to new heights. “I used to be an assistant plant manager at COIT, which was about as far as I could go up the ladder,” he recalls. “I got involved in the window industry when the plant manager at COIT referred me to a management job with a vinyl window manufacturer. From there, I got into window sales and consulting, and in 1989, I opened my own business.”
Today, as president of Quality Windows &amp; Doors, Inc., Eric says his favorite part of his job is helping customers find the right products. “A big part of our job is learning our customers’ particular needs and matching them with products that meet those needs. After going through the process from selection to installation, it’s very satisfying to see the customer happy with the final result.”
Originally from Southern California, Eric moved to the Bay Area when he was 13 years old and today resides in Pleasanton with his wife, Marianne. Outside of work, he stays physically active by engaging in his favorite pastime: tennis. “I’ve been playing tennis since I was a kid,” he says. “I played in college, and I still play several times a week with friends and family.” Speaking of family, Eric also enjoys spending time with his and Marianne’s children, Nicole and Billy, and their grandson, Isaac.
In regard to his professional career, Eric espouses the importance of providing helpful expertise. “Since we have a showroom, we get a lot of customers who come in with questions,” he explains. “This makes it extra important for us to be on our game in terms of product knowledge, since they’re depending on us to help them make informed decisions. That’s why we strive to provide good communication and customer service in addition to quality products and workmanship.”
When asked what his future retirement might look like, Eric says he’ll continue to pursue the same activities he currently enjoys. “I’ll continue to play tennis, spend time with my kids and just enjoy life. Maybe I’ll compete on the senior men’s tennis tour!”
